Do stereotype-free lesbian movies exist?

Here’s a video commentary about the stereotypes gay and lesbian characters often conform to in Australian movies. It’s aslo an interesting analysis of how Australian society perceives homosexuals, in contrast to say, America or Europe. The situation in the Philippines is very similar in the sense that there are more films featuring gay men, while lesbian movies are very rare (in fact I know of only 3, with 2 of them being independently produced).

In this study on Australian films, included are clips from:

  • The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
  • He Died with a Felafel in his Hand
  • The Getting of Wisdom
  • Lantana
  • The Well
  • Walking on Water
  • Only the Brave
  • Picnic at Hanging Rock
  • The Sum of Us
  • Love and Other Catastrophes
  • Sirens

    Wow you have me depressed.
What are lesbians in australia supposed to watch

In the US and Uk, we complain about lack of choice when it comes to movies portraying the lesbian lifestyle but compared to what your little video suggests, we are spoilt for choice. Do you guys get the L word in australia?

Sorry about that, but I’ve always believed it’s better to know the facts than pretending everything’s all peachy. I guess you shouldn’t see how lesbians are portrayed in the Philippines. It might actually make you cry.

I’m not from Australia, btw. Just found this informative video on YouTube. But I believe they do get the L-Word there. And anyway, there’s always DVDs and the Internet.

It really is distressing how lesbians and gay men still do not have a voice in many places in the world

It still is ‘the love that dare not speak it’s name’ in the majority of the third world

And it seems the divide is only getting wider i.e while the western world is more openly acknowledging the gay and lesbian community, now there are gay marriages and things like that, the rest of the world seems to pushing them further into the closet
