The L-Word Season 5: Meta makes it so much better

Meta - something with refers to itself, esp. in self-parodying manner (for example, a movie-within-a-movie)

Truth be told, I lost interest watching The L-Word as early as the first season. I felt that if you cut out all the sex scenes, each episode would barely make it to 5 minutes. Now some people love that much girl-on-girl action, but it just ain’t my cup of tea. I was so used to Willow and Tara and their sweet, easy-going relationship, that frankly, The L-Word kinda turned me off.

However, Season 4 made me think twice. Partly because I liked Helena’s storyline coping with being close to penniless, and though Shane left Carmen at the altar, she was pretty much monogamous that season. But Season 5, well, dang! Every opening got me rolling over the floor laughing. And may I add, in the best way possible. It’s nice to see the show in effect examining itself by going through Jenny’s Lez Girls storyline. I always thought Mia Kirshner is so darn pretty. I hope Jenny gets to finally redeem herself as a character this season (hey, it could happen).

Episode 1 opened with Jenny writing/daydreaming about the party where she and then-boyfriend Tim first got introduced to the girls. Only, Jenny’s version involves Bette/Bev, Tina/Nina and Shane/Shaun oggling her and her “cute little ass”. It was funny to see Tina/Nina being so predatorial, because never in her (fictional) life would she do that. I guess in Jenny’s mind, it’s not the sun but her at the center of the solar system. I’m sure the Pope and Galileo will have something to say about that.

Episode 2 was even funnier as the big studio executive insisted on what all Hollywood bosses seem to want: sex, sex, and even more sex. Can’t have enough of it. The teaser is like a fanfic writer’s dream: Bette/Bev makes out with Shane/Shaun, Shane/Shaun gets it on with Tina/Nina, and Bette/Bev struggles with Helena/Helen who gets to be on top. The first two pairings are icky to me, but the Bev-Helen thing was definitely interesting.

But it was Episode 3’s teaser that just really blew me away. I *love* Charlie’s Angels. To have The L-Word spoof it was priceless. And Alice’s facial expressions? They make me think she’s been dreaming of playing the part all her life. For sure, this scene ranks among the most memorable of all the five seasons. I heard the concept was from a fanfic writer who won a contest. Great job! Write more, please!

So what’s next? I try to keep away from spoilers as much as I can, but this little sneak preview was too much to pass up. Turkish oil wrestling anyone?
