Out Fil-Australian B-girl Demi Sorono is still living it up as she dances her way to the Top 6 of SYTYCD Australia. The other girls remaining are Kate and Vanessa, while the boys are Graeme, Jack and Rhys. Demi has never been at the Bottom Three, which is a testament to how much the fans (and judges) love her. At this point, she’s the only untrained dancer left in the competition - ever more reason for her family to be proud she made it this far. But hey, don’t stop there, get all the way to the top, girl!
Demi’s answers to fan questions from her blog:
If you could fall for a guy, who would it be? I would turn straight for Rhys, and I know for fact that Rhys would turn straight for me. I love a man that has an appreciation for fashion.
Your dream dance partner in the competition? If I could dance with anyone in the Top 20: I’d love to do a Jazz routine with Kate.
Here are the videos of her latest performances:

OUT.com has just released their 2nd Annual Power 50 List - a compilation of the most influential gays and lesbians today. The candidates were restricted to those who are (1) gay themselves (not just gay-friendly) and (2) living and working primarily in North America. So don’t expect high profile people like Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen, Anne Will, or Satsu the Vampire Slayer, even though it would’ve been fun to see them on the list. Closet king and queen Anderson Cooper of CNN and Jodie Foster, however, made it through.

Ruth and Naomi, Orpah departing, 1902
by Philip Hermogenes Calderon (1833-1898)
“Do not press me to leave you or to turn back from following you! Where you go, I will go; where you lodge I will lodge; your people shall be my people, and your God my God. Where you die, I will die — there will I be buried. May the Lord do thus and so to me, and more as well, if even death parts me from you!” - Ruth 1:16-17

Here’s a video commentary about the stereotypes gay and lesbian characters often conform to in Australian movies. It’s aslo an interesting analysis of how Australian society perceives homosexuals, in contrast to say, America or Europe. The situation in the Philippines is very similar in the sense that there are more films featuring gay men, while lesbian movies are very rare (in fact I know of only 3, with 2 of them being independently produced).
In this study on Australian films, included are clips from:
- The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert
- He Died with a Felafel in his Hand
- The Getting of Wisdom
- Lantana
- The Well
- Walking on Water
- Only the Brave
- Picnic at Hanging Rock
- The Sum of Us
- Love and Other Catastrophes
- Sirens

This doesn’t happen everyday, at least not here. For those in Manila, you can catch a piece of history by watching “Rolling the Ls Home” on April 18 at Kublai’s in Katipunan. This once-in-a-lifetime event will feature June Millington, critically-acclaimed guitarist and rock legend; Pow Chavez, band vocalist and finalist in ABC5’s Philippine Idol; and Louiie Victa, a Fil-Am independent artist from Las Vegas. For ticket reservations, please email lunduyanngsining@gmail.com. Visit the Lunduyan ng Sining (Sanctuary of Art) website for more details.
