5 Things I’ll miss most about Star Trek: Voyager
Just a few months ago, all I knew about Star Trek were some vague recollections of the show back in the 80’s. But my wife’s a big fan, so I’d join her when she watched the original series on DVD. It was actually alright. I loved Spock (I’ve named my laptop after him - how geeky is that?). I began to appreciate the sci-fi genre for its metaphors, but I was turned off whenever Captain Kirk took off his shirt and/or started kissing random girls (cue rousing music), which occurred far too often for my taste. Really, the writers could have done better.
Upon a friend’s tip, my wife and I decided to try Star Trek: Voyager, a more recent series based on the same concept of space exploration. This time, I loved watching all seven seasons, and here are just a few of the reasons why:
1. Captain Kathryn Janeway
Voyager is filled to the brim with girl power. For one, the Captain is a woman - highly intelligent, a cunning diplomat, and can stand her ground in battles. Addicted to coffee: black. Sometimes they give her one-episode male love interests, but in my head she’ll always have a thing for Seven of Nine. *buries self in subtext*

2. Seven of Nine
Tertiary Adjunct of Unimatrix Zero One. Her real name is Anika Hansen, child of two scientists who studied the Borg. She was assimilated into a drone when she was only 6 years old. Seven of Nine was “captured” by Captain Janeway, who helped her regain her humanity (see the before and after pics below). It was fun seeing Seven’s slow and sometimes awkward steps to re-learning what it means to be human.

3. Kes
Sweet Kes. I’ve been missing her since she left the show early in Season 4. She’s an Ocampan who assists The Doctor in Sickbay and grows flowers and vegetables for the crew. As the seasons went by, she developed telepathic and psychokinetic powers. The best thing about Kes is that she’s so together, so wise beyond her years. And dammit, she’s cute!

4. Neelix
The best cook in the Delta Quadrant! If you like exotic food, he’s your Talaxian. Voyager’s resident chef, morale officer, expert guide and ambassador. The journey wouldn’t have been half as fun without Neelix.

5. The Doctor
Perhaps the most well-loved character in Voyager. He’s the quirky Emergency Medical Hologram that was activated when the resident human doctor aboard Voyager died. Sure, he’s a hologram, but he constantly developed his program, that in the end he was treated like a regular sentient being. He even fathered a child along the way (don’t ask me how that happened). Here’s one of my favorite scenes from the episode “Someone to Watch Over Me”, where The Doctor teaches Seven of Nine how to sing, and inadvertently falls in love with her.
I’m afraid this song has been permanently embedded in my brain. *sings along* “You are my sunshine, my only sunshine…”

I watch Voyager every weekday on Spike TV in the afternoons. I think its one of the better Star Trek Series, but maybe that’s just because it’s the one I’m currently watching all the time.
The other day my wife said that if we had a daughter, she wanted to name her “Kathryn Elizabeth.”
I said “Cool, like Captain Janeway.”
She had no idea what I was talking about.
Oh come on ladies, how can you pay a tribute to the women Star Trek Voyager without mention of B’Lanna Torres. She is amazing, her strength, her courage, her sometimes snippiness. Her love hate relationship with 7 of 9. How can you not mention B’lanna??
B’Elanna Torres is one heck of a woman, no argument there. In fact one of my earliest favorite episode was “Faces”, when she was split into her Klingon and human personalities.
But this is just a list of 5 things I’ll miss most. If I were to complete it, I might reach 100, which would bore everyone to death (except the geekiest of us all, whom I’ll salute).
If it were actually titled “Tribute to the Women of Voyager”, B’Elanna would definitely be in it, and maybe even little Naomi Campbell, who grows up to be a fine Starfleet officer.
Anyway, I think Celine has already committed to writing a whole article on BLT. She’s quite a B/7 fan.
Jason: I’m also interested to watch TNG and DS9 soon. As for Enterprise, my wife warns me it’s not that good, so, hmmm. I guess I’ll post here again after I’m through with them.
BTW, your wife is brilliant! If I get any deeper into this, I might just name my future daughter after one of the characters.
Now that’s really trekkie.
Oh oops, my bad you so did say that it was the 5 things you would miss. However I would personally miss B’lanna well before I would miss Neelix.
We’re good then.
My wife is considering B’Elanna as our (future) daughter’s name. Huh!
hello it is test. WinRAR provides the full RAR and ZIP file support, can decompress CAB, GZIP, ACE and other archive formats.

I love it XD I’m watching Voyager right now
I like the clip of Doctor and Seven =D
Bah, Kes wasn’t much to me. I mean she was alright and everything… maybe it was just her voice that annoyed me. It was so calm and nice… Ah well. My top five would be a bit different…
1. Seven of Nine
2. Janeway
3. The Doctor
4. Tuvok
5. B’lanna
Good list. Janeway was an underrated captain. One of my favorite episodes is Counterpoint, where she plays a cat and mouse game with a guy she’s romantically involved with while at the same time works with him to creatively solve a problem that Voyager was facing.
The Doc was definitely a high point for Voyager, although I wish they would have made him act a little more like a computer program in the beginning. He came off more like an autistic guy then a piece of self-aware technology, like Data. Still, the way his character developed was great. And you gotta love his daydreams…
Kes was a great character too. She was one cute little elf. It’s easy to see why Neelix was so into her. I would be too. Matter of fact, I found this blog when I typed “Kes is cute” into google.
