I think I’m kinda gay: The many facets of Willow Rosenberg

Valentines day is fast approaching. Traditionally, it’s that time of the year when we give out (and/or receive) flowers, chocolates, and perhaps jewelry. But I’m a simple girl content with my simple world. A kiss and a hug from my girlfriend is more than enough. Of course, I still have my fantasies, and no, it’s not a diamond ring, but having Miss Willow Rosenberg - in molded plastic. Allow me to indulge my inner Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan.

Vampire Willow

Doppelgangland, well! Anya does a spell that causes Vampire Willow from an alternate reality to appear in Sunnydale. When I think of this episode, I always get that same eerie feeling when I first saw Vampire Willow walk into the bar while K’s Choice was singing Virgin State of Mind. Perfect. And who could forget Vampire Willow licking Geeky Willow’s neck? OK, sick, but priceless. And the immortal line of foreshadowing, “That’s me as a vampire? I’m so evil, and skanky… and I think I’m kinda gay.” :D This 6-inch statuette includes vampy accessories like whip and handcuffs. Can you say B-D-S-M?

The L-Word Season 5: Meta makes it so much better

Meta - something with refers to itself, esp. in self-parodying manner (for example, a movie-within-a-movie)

Truth be told, I lost interest watching The L-Word as early as the first season. I felt that if you cut out all the sex scenes, each episode would barely make it to 5 minutes. Now some people love that much girl-on-girl action, but it just ain’t my cup of tea. I was so used to Willow and Tara and their sweet, easy-going relationship, that frankly, The L-Word kinda turned me off.

However, Season 4 made me think twice. Partly because I liked Helena’s storyline coping with being close to penniless, and though Shane left Carmen at the altar, she was pretty much monogamous that season. But Season 5, well, dang! Every opening got me rolling over the floor laughing. And may I add, in the best way possible. It’s nice to see the show in effect examining itself by going through Jenny’s Lez Girls storyline. I always thought Mia Kirshner is so darn pretty. I hope Jenny gets to finally redeem herself as a character this season (hey, it could happen).

      The Bewitching Amber Benson

amber_benson.jpgYou may remember Amber as Tara Maclay, Willow’s long-time girlfriend in Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Amber came into the show in the middle of Season 4, where her first appearance was in the episode “Hush”. At first, she was met with resistance by fans who were fiercely devoted to Seth Green’s character, Oz. Also, there was that itsy-bitsy little issue about turning Willow gay. Remember, this was years before L-Word, and having lesbians on TV was even more taboo. Ah, but Joss Whedon, the show’s creator, was stubborn in his belief in Tara as a character. Eventually, she proved her worth to the fans. Tara was embraced as Willow’s lover and part of the Scoobie Gang.
