118 Iran

In the Iranian Islamic Penal Code homosexuality is illegal and punishable by death. Torture in the form of whipping is also used to punish homosexuals. Ironically, the law provides for a choice of execution — hanging, stoning, being halved by a sword or dropped from a high place — but a judge may also decide which form of execution is employed. Punishment may occur if two men or two women are discovered lying under one cover or even kissing “with lust”.

This was written in IRQO.net, the website of the Iranian Queer Organization. If it wasn’t for the Internet, perhaps nobody would know they even exist, what with the iron clad rule against homosexuality in their country. I’ve always found it amusing that some people in Iran insist that homosexuality doesn’t exist inside their borders. They should definitely go out more.

But this news isn’t amusing. According to The Independent of UK, Pegah, a 40-year-old lesbian, fled Iran and went to Britain “after her girlfriend was arrested and sentenced to death faces being forcibly returned after losing the latest round in her battle to be granted asylum.” She’s now facing deportation as the British courts seem less than eager to grant her that asylum. Then it dawned on me: OIL. Who said only four-letter words could be dirty?

Tying the Knot: Why legal marriage matters

I’d like to share to you this trailer of a compelling documentary I saw a few months ago. It’s called Tying the Knot, and it’s about the fight for gay marriage in America. Why is it so important? Among other things, without a state-recognized union, your partner will be treated pretty much like crap if you die, and you won’t be there to defend them. Yep. God bless America.

Here’s a summary of the film:

When a bank robber’s bullet ends the life of police officer Lois Marrero, her wife of thirteen years, Mickie, is honored as her surviving spouse but denied all pension benefits. When Sam, an Oklahoma rancher, loses his beloved husband of 22 years, long-estranged cousins of his late spouse try to lay claim to everything Sam has. As Mickie and Sam’s lives are put on trial, they are forced to confront the tragic reality that in the eyes of the law their marriages mean nothing. From an historical trip to the Middle Ages, to gay hippies storming the Manhattan marriage bureau in 1971, Tying the Knot digs deeply into the past and present to uncover the meaning of civil marriage in America today.

Go to the film’s website and watch a video clip of the trailer:
