Favorite Lesbian Quotes of the Week
Because some lines just stick out and grab you. Here’s the first part of my quote selection, taken from some of the best lesbian movies I’ve had the pleasure to see. With so many out there, I’m thinking I could make this a weekly affair. But for now, I leave you with words of wisdom from Tipping the Velvet, Saving Face, and Gray Matters.
Tipping the Velvet
Freddy: [Initiating sex] You can hold on as tight as you like. Don’t worry, I’ll tell you if it hurts.
Nan: No, I don’t want to!
Freddy: What’s the matter?
Nan: Nothing, I just don’t want that Freddy.
Freddy: I am serious you know Nan? We could be engaged! Well, then it would be alright wouldn’t it?
Nan: Can’t we just go on as we are?
Freddy: You don’t really care for me at all.
Nan: I do though.
Freddy: No you don’t, you just like to keep me there tagging along like. If you really cared for me you’d let me do it.
Nan: Well then, I don’t care for you!

Florence: “Tipping the velvet”? Why what ever can THAT be?
Nan: You don’t know?
Florence: Well it sounds like something to do with dress making or millinary, but it can’t be. No one would pay to watch that.
Nan: [Laughing] No. It isn’t.
Florence: Well what then?
Nan: [Shows Florence the tip of her tongue, then pointedly nods and looks at Florence’s lap]
Florence: Oh!
Saving Face
Wil: So how come we never met before now?
Vivian: We did meet. Nineteen years ago. I was 8, you were 9. Outside the temple.
Wil: I don’t remember.
Vivian: The Wong boys were taunting me about my parents’ divorce. You beat the crap out of them. You were wearing a Kristy McNichol t-shirt, tan cords and a pageboy. You spilled your mom’s groceries. We scooped them into a bag.
Wil: That’s right, and then…
Vivian: And then I kissed you on the nose. And you ran.

Mrs. Shing: [Leaving message on the answering machine while Wil and Vivian are having sex] Hello, Vivian? This is your mother. Just calling to say hi. Hope your birthday good. Did Wil show up? Thought you may wanna talk after she leaves… Oh, maybe she’s still there? Okay. Bye.
Wil: Oh, my God. You talked to your mother about us?
Vivian: Yeah. So?
Wil: “So”? Does she know we have sex?
Vivian: [sighs] No, Wil. She thinks we conjugate Latin verbs.
Wil: Really?
Gray Matters
Gray: I don’t feel normal. I’m sick and tired of everyone saying it’s normal, it’s typical, it’s ordinary. I don’t feel any of those things.
Sam: Well how do you feel?
Gray: Lonely.
Sam: Why?
Gray: Because I’m never going to be able to walk down the street, holding hands with my partner without the rest of the world giving us a look. And me never have the wedding that I once dreamed of and I may never have children. And one day when I die people will never give as much respect to my grieving lover as if she were my husband.
Sam: Gray, it’s not as if you made a choice.
Gray: That’s what terrifies me. It’s so much easier to be someone else.
—
Gray: I have to tell you something and it’s not easy. It’s really major. I don’t know how to say it.
Sam: Why don’t you take three short breaths and…
Gray: …and one long.
[Gray takes three short and one long]
Gray: I’m gay!
Sam: What?
Gray: As in Marvin.
Sam: What?
Gray: As in, take the R out of Gray and BINGO!

Carrie: I quit weight watchers. Can you believe it? I quit! Fergie schmergie! I hate fiber. I like mallomars and if Derek isn’t going to love me for the tiny amount of cellulite I have on the back of my thighs then fuck him. Screw that guy. This is the package ok? It’s exactly the same under the wrapping. This is the packages, no exchanges, no returns. Right? Why does our society push us to be perpetually uncomfortable with who we are. It’s so messed up! Wanna know why?
[reading from a magazine]
Carrie: ” Boost your buttocks and thighs. Luscious Liposuction. Flawless face lifts.” That’s why. Enough is enough. We need to stop letting society and media and our religious leaders delegate who we are. You’re amazing and I’m even more amazing and anybody who doesn’t get it can screw themselves…
[sigh]
Carrie: That felt fantastic.
